The Grand Canyon

The  Grand Canyon, located  only  300 miles from Las Vegas, is one of the world`s scenic wonders. The  national  park  extends from Lake Mead, between  Arizona and Nevada, almost to Lake Powell  on  the Utah border and follows the path of the Colorado River.

The Grand Canyon

This masterpiece of natural sculpture, modeled by erosion,
is 276 miles long, 18 miles wide, and 5,200 feet deep.

The Grand Canyon has impressive layers of rock, which are made of particles that were transported by wind and water and settled and accumulated to form a layer of sedimen-
tation.

The layers in the canyon are a geologic clock. Just as the rings  within a tree trunk tell  their story, the layers of rock brought to surface by erosion produced by the Colorado River offer
a clear chronology that goes back to the most ancient eras known to geologists.
Experts believe it took about 10 million years to create the Grand Canyon. The oldest rocks found  in the Grand Canyon are more than 2 billion years old.

Grand Canyon Rock Formation

The  Grand Canyon is a definitive break  in  the pysical and geological continuity of two regions of northern Arizona, known as the North Rim and the South Rim. The South Rim is open year-around, but the  less-traveled North  Rim is closed due to snow from mid- October until mid-May.

A descent into the Colorado gorge means breathtaking views and venturing into a vortex of geological history. In the  Grand Canyon, anitquity  is  paired  with great biological diversity. The  Canyon  is  characterized by remarkable variety  of  climates. The temperature on the  northern  plateau is on the average 65F lower than that at the bottom of the spectaculs gorge. In February snow on the North Rim can be several feet deep, while because  of  the mild temperature, the  banks of the Colorado are covered with flowers.

Las Vegas is the most logical starting point for making an visit to Grand Canyon.

Tourists who prefer to spend most of the day enjoying the beauty of Arizona desert can choose a bus-tour. But if you don`t have a lot of time, choose a Helicopter Flight to the Grand Canyon, that includes majestic views  of  Lake  Mead, Hoover Dam and takes approximately 3.5 hours.

Grand Canyon with Colorado River

Shortly after the end of World War I, Ferdinand Foch, the former supreme commander of the  Allied  forces, visited the Grand Canyon.  A swarm of reporters foolowed the French leader, eager to report the Foch`s impressions. It is said that Foch gazed for some time at the immense gorge yawning open before him, then murmured:

“The canyon is the greatest manifestation of the presence of God
on the face of the Earth.”
